- The Biometric Difference
Biometrics is the the study of automated methods for uniquely recognizing
people based upon one or more intrinsic physical or behavioral traits. The term is derived from the
Greek words "bios", meaning life, and "metron", meaning measure.
In Information Technology (IT),
biometric authentication refers to one or more of several technologies for
measuring and analyzing human physical and behavioral characteristics for authentication purposes.
These can include fingerprint and retinal scanners, voice scanners, passcode prompts, picture
identification through a digital camera or webcam, ID card scanners, and other similar identification
technologies.
In a typical IT biometric setup, when a new user registers with the system, one or more of his or her
physical and behavorial characteristics are obtained, processed by a numerical algorithm, and entered
into a database. Then, each time that user logs in, these characteristics are measured and
compared against the master in the database. If the characteristics match, the user is
allowed to use the system. If someone else tries to log in as that user, the system will recognize
a non-match, and will not allow them to log in.
As an assessment platform that
incorporates biometric controls, Ergotest™ can be customized to use one or more biometric
technologies to authenticate your users. Ergocentric Software
recommends that its clients select at least 2-3 separate methods of authentication for use on the
Ergotest™ server. This will provide your system with a complete
multifactor authentication setup.
